Attention Important Changes for Candidates seeking BPI Certification
As part of its ANSI (American National Standards Institute) Accreditation process, the Building Performance Institute (BPI) has announced a set of changes that will take effect on February 1, 2012.
By achieving ANSI Accreditation, BPI is making every effort to ensure that every exam processed is fair and uniform across the country. This statement also validates that energy auditing standards for residential homes are current, responsible, and professional. ANSI Accreditation safeguards the integrity of standards-bearing organizations like BPI and validates its standards through third-party verification.
What This Means to You the Candidate
Starting February 2012, BPI is requiring that all certification exams be video and audio recorded. Because so many people are camera-shy, we are offering testing opportunities before BPI’s new rules go into effect.
All training courses that lead to BPI exams will have an increase in 2012. This increase will apply to all BPI training courses provided by Green Jobs Training Center as well as exams give by BPI themselves.
Your BPI Certification is about to become even more valuable with the introduction of videotaped exams.
If you are already certified, and your certification expires on May 31, 2012 or before, you may take your re-certification exams in December/January and avoid video/audio recording. Only exams taken prior to Feb 1st will not be video/audio recorded.
Exam dates are Dec 29/30, 2011 or Jan 3/4, 2012. Please call for an appointment.

There are 128 million existing homes in America, and many were built before modern energy codes were established. Residential structures are responsible for 20% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the country, because they use so much fossil fuel. For many homeowners and tenants, energy bills account for far too much of the monthly budget.
BPI certified professionals are in demand now more than ever before. In fact, many state-run energy efficiency and weatherization assistance programs demand BPI credentials. With the unprecedented funding available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), BPI certified professionals have a key role to play in helping these programs expand.
Why?
Because BPI certified professionals are individuals who have proven their skills, by meeting stringent, nationally recognized standards and passing both written and field examinations. Ongoing Continuing Education Units (CEUs) keep these specialists on top of emerging issues, technologies and best practices.
Using the house-as-a-system approach, they conduct comprehensive whole-home assessments that go beyond a traditional energy audit to establish performance levels and trace problems to the root cause. Then they prescribe and prioritize real solutions based on proven building science. At the end of each job, a second assessment confirms that the desired performance improvements have been achieved. The result is work that’s done right – the first time. Energy efficiency is enhanced for the long-term, while occupant comfort, health and safety are not just protected, but often dramatically improved.
Join!
Become one of the highly skilled workforce Individuals who have taken BPI training, achieved certification and are better prepared to properly diagnose and correct home performance problems. Accredited companies that employ you know they will experience fewer call backs and enjoy an increased rate of referrals from satisfied customers. Homeowners can trust that their energy bills will be reduced, while their family’s comfort, health and safety are enhanced. |

GJTC provides Training and Certification Exams in the following;
Building Analyst
Going beyond a traditional energy audit to perform comprehensive, whole-home assessments. This is a solid foundation for all building science professionals.
Building Analyst course will teach you basic principles of building science to assess energy efficiency in a home while also monitoring conditions that have a direct impact on occupant’s health and safety. BPI Standards emphasize the 'house-as-a-system' approach to auditing a home. You will learn how to use diagnostic equipment such as the blower door and the combustion analyzer to ensure systems are functioning together correctly to maximize home performance, comfort, energy efficiency, safety and durability. A Building Analyst with BPI certification gives homeowners peace of mind knowing the professional met the national standards of the Building Performance Institute having passed both a written and a hands-on field performance exam.
Envelope Professional
Quantifying performance and prescribing improvements to help tighten the building envelope (shell).
Envelope Professional* uses a “whole house” performanc-based approach; this course will cover advanced building envelope diagnostic, specialization that focuses on ways to enhance the envelope's thermal and pressure boundaries through insulation and air sealing techniques, evaluation, and repair skills to help you prepare for the Building Performance Institute’s Envelope Professional written and a hands-on field performance exam. Training will include review of some Building Analyst topics, but is not a BA preparatory course.
*Note - The Envelope Professional Certification in conjunction with the Building Analyst Certification will make your company (and employees) eligible to apply for Accreditation (company i.e. insulation, weatherization, window installation company, retro fit construction, HVAC etc.). BPI Accreditation may be required by many Federal, State & Utility programs. Accreditation can also be useful in acquiring various incentives for homeowners throughout each town and state.
Heating Professional
Optimizing the performance of heating equipment to help save energy and ensure occupant comfort, health and safety.
Heating Professional course will prepare you to understand heating system load and sizing, design, duct system diagnostics, and proper maintenance and efficiency analysis. Training will include review of some Building Analyst topics, but is not a BA preparatory course.
Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Professional
Is designed for BPI professionals looking to add cooling systems & concepts to their existing knowledge in meeting the BPI standards. Understanding the role of these systems within the whole home and how to achieve peak performance. Training will include review of some Building Analyst topics, but is not a BA preparatory course.
Multifamily Professional
Applying building-as-a-system fundamentals to improve the performance of larger, more complex residential structures.
Multifamily Professional course will prepare you to understand heating system load and sizing, design, duct system diagnostics, and proper maintenance and efficiency analysis. Training will include review of some Building Analyst topics, but is not a BA preparatory course.
Whole House Air Leakage Controller
The scope of this certification scheme includes the installation of specific air leakage control measures in accessible and inaccessible unconditioned and semi-conditioned spaces of existing residential homes. These specific measures represent typical air leakage control applications and incorporate the principals of air leakage control, which then can be applied to most air leakage control locations.
The installer(s) will demonstrate their abilities to reduce uncontrolled air movement by creating continuous durable air pressure boundaries in attics, side attics, crawl spaces and other accessible buffer zones by installing and connecting appropriate materials in a durable fashion.
We know that the ability to perform an assessment and make recommendations for improvements are not the only skills a home performance contractor needs on the job. That’s why every course includes a module on health & safety, professional ethics, conduct and communications.
BPI certified professionals are required to participate in ongoing Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to keep each specialist on top of emerging issues, technologies and best practices. |
